About Us
The Davis Historical Fencing Club is dedicated to the Kunst des Fechtens tradition of longsword fencing originally practiced in the 15th-16th century. Join us for tri-weekly practices, intra-club fencing matches, and literature reviews. / Kunst des Fechtens originated in late 14th century in what is now modern Germany was the martial arts taught to practiced by knights of the Holy Roman Empire. By the 16th century, this martial art was adopted by the Burgher classes of the Germany city states as new weapons technologies and military tactics displaced the Langeschwert in importance; However, the practice of Kunst des Fechtens died out by the 17th century. We are part of a larger, growing international movement called HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) which is resurrecting the forgotten martial arts of Europe from the medieval to the early modern period. One of the focuses of HEMA groups throughout the USA and Europe is Kunst des Fechtens which is being brought back to life through the study of period fencing manuals, cross referencing with currently living martial arts, and academic research. Our club's fencing is based on material recorded in Johannes Lichtenaeur's Zettel and Joachim Meyer's later book, "A Thorough Description of the Art of Combat," (1570). We will also occasionally practice Classical Italian fencing, Ringen, and dagger fencing. We hold regular practices and welcome both students and non-students to come join us for a day of fencing. If you're looking for a serious martial art, a way to explore your nerdy love for swords and history, or something in between, we're the perfect club for you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Practices: Mondays and Fridays, timing TBD before Fall 2024.
