Hey guys! I'm Alyssa, a fourth-year psychology major and sociology minor. I'm a first-gen transfer from Los Medanos College.

Since I transferred in Fall '23, I've been commuting from the East Bay via Amtrak (Martinez to Davis)! I decided to commute mainly for financial reasons, to save money and avoid loans like the plague. Honestly, I'm grateful Amtrak exists—it definitely makes the commuting experience easier for me. I don't have to worry about driving and can just relax or study! Of course, it has its issues (like the dreaded delays), but that's the life of a commuter. It's either traffic or train delays.

I understand how difficult the commuter lifestyle can be, especially with connecting with the campus and other students. Being a transfer adds onto that too, like I just got here and I'm already graduating! So, to impart some of my unsolicited wisdom on y'all, you gotta take that first step to put yourself out there. Whether that be joining that club you're interested in, going to that event, or hanging out with that cool classmate (when you can), do what you want to do. I'm definitely glad that, despite my worries, I put myself out there anyway. I'm happy that the club offers that sense of community for us. It makes getting involved and connecting easier; we're all people who are experiencing the same thing, the commute and what comes with it.

With the quarter system, everything goes by so quickly. Sometimes, you gotta stop, breathe, and just be present in the moment. Like go duck watching in the arb, lay down in the quad grass, or get some food downtown (Yoloberry is pretty good for something sweet). Enjoy your time here at Davis. I hope you guys keep that in mind as we enter the last stretch of the quarter. Wishing y'all good luck and hope to see you at our upcoming events!

Huge thanks to everyone who participated in our Panda Express fundraiser! Your support helps us keep creating meaningful events and resources for this community.

Wishing everyone a nice long weekend!
