We are Seminar Outreach for Minority Advocacy (SOMA), a graduate student organization dedicated to amplifying the stories of scientists from underrepresented backgrounds. Each year, we host our annual SOMA Summit, an event focused on a theme related to DEI in academia. This year’s Summit will be on May 30, and aims to provide graduate students with an interest in academic research and teaching the tools and resources necessary to successfully transition to a future career. This is pertinent because there is a lack of formalized education in graduate programs focused on career search strategies (e.g., connecting with relevant people and negotiating salary), and this information is often inaccessible to underrepresented and first-generation scholars. Additionally, they often navigate bias and discrimination along with the typical stressors of job hunting. Speakers will include postdoctoral scholars, lecturers, junior faculty, and career advisors. The event’s sessions will include career resources on campus, postdoctoral and faculty job searches, different types of faculty jobs (e.g., R1 vs. teaching institutions), and nontraditional academic careers such as administration. Included will be a networking lunch and coffee breaks. We will also facilitate networking and discussion for participants to connect with speakers and each other.
