AWG UC Davis chapter is the student chapter of the national AWG organization. We are dedicated to the promotion and encouragement of women (and allies) in geosciences, and STEM fields more broadly. We foster community through our shared interests, values, and educational activities. We also serve as the only current registered grad student organization in our department (Earth and Planetary Sciences), so we aim to serve as a source of community and support for all graduate students in our department.

The Chinese Graduate and Postdoctoral Scholars Association (CGPSA) is a non-profit, non-political and non-religious organization whose purpose is to promote the cultural, intellectual and social communications among graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and visiting scholars (most of them are faculties or doctoral students) from China at UC Davis. The CGPSA aims to provide a platform for high-level educated Chinese researchers to socialize, to collaborate in research and to mutually help/advise in the future career through various social, entertainment and academic activities held by CGPSA.

The CSTGSA works to support and build solidarity between graduate students affiliated within Cultural Studies, as well as affiliated and aligned programs, organizations, students and communities. The organization’s role is to protect, advocate for, and advance the interests of CST students to ensure greater social justice, and to do so by any means necessary.

We sponsor lectures, workshops, and presentations. We co-sign on letters of solidarity addressing issues facing our members and the community at large. Additionally, we collaborate with other organizations on campus for events, cultural activities, workshops, and other programs that promote the voices and experiences of underrepresented and marginalized communities and peoples.

CSTGSA believes in the power of collaboration and representation. For these reasons, CSTGSA members and leaders commit to supporting and building community with anyone that interfaces with our graduate group. We do so by joining committees, alliances, coalitions, attending meetings, providing feedback, creating spaces, and showing up for each other.

Mission
Equity in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Entrepreneurship (ESTEME) is a graduate student organization dedicated to improving equity and inclusion in STEM fields and entrepreneurship. Initiated under the UC Davis Biotechnology Program in 2014, ESTEME has since evolved into an interdisciplinary group that seeks to promote meaningful community involvement from graduate students across a wide range of majors. Our mission is to: (i) inspire individuals from underrepresented groups to pursue careers in STEM and entrepreneurship through outreach and community service; (ii) empower students to overcome and eliminate inequity based on gender, ethnicity/race, sexual orientation, and/or socioeconomic background; (iii) promote allyship and community responsibility for diversity/equity initiatives; (iv) raise awareness and generate critical conversation to reduce disparities in leadership roles; and (v) create opportunities to develop emotional intelligence and improve leadership skills such as communication, collaboration, and compassion. Programming in ESTEME typically focuses on providing members with opportunities for outreach, professional development, and engagement with local leaders. We also organize an annual diversity colloquium, during which a panel of professionals (typically from underrepresented minority groups) from industry and academia are invited to share their experiences and speak to students about equity and diversity-related topics.

The Graduate Peer Support (GPS) program seeks to increase access to social support by hosting weekly and quarterly events and facilitating a peer-to-peer mentorship program, encouraging cross-disciplinary interactions within UC Davis’s diverse graduate student community.

In addition to addressing physical health, cultivating one’s mental and social wellness is critical to living a balanced and fulfilling life. Social fitness refers to the combined resources available in one’s social world (e.g., social support) that can be used to effectively manage and overcome stressors. Graduate students are at risk for experiencing mental health problems due to the rigorous demands and often socially isolating experience of graduate study. The 2021 UC Davis Graduate Student Experience Survey revealed that 36% of graduate and professional students met the threshold for clinically significant depressive symptoms, and 32% disagreed that there is a strong sense of community among graduate students at our university. Thus, the Graduate Peer Support (GPS) program seeks to increase access to social support by hosting weekly and quarterly events and facilitating a peer-to-peer mentorship program, encouraging cross-disciplinary interactions within UC Davis’s diverse graduate student community. Official student members of GPS participate as either mentors or mentees and are invited to program-specific events. GPS also hosts events open to all graduate students regardless of GPS membership, independently and in collaboration with other campus programs.

The Graduate Student Ensemble gives music graduate students a new creative and social setting in which they can experiment with varied instrumentation and diverse repertoire.
Currently, as music graduate students, we are able to perform with a limited number of large musical ensembles that focus on a limited selection of musics, mostly centered around the western classical tradition. As such, not all graduate students have a musical outlet with which they identify or in which they can fully express themselves.

The Graduate Student Ensemble will give music graduate students a new creative and social setting in which they can experiment with varied instrumentation and diverse repertoire. The ensemble will create a space in which music graduate students can engage in and with music at various steps in its realization. This ensemble will allow our graduate composers and graduate performers to engage with their respective areas, but more importantly, the ensemble will allow the boundaries of composition and performance to overlap. This dynamic creates valuable learning opportunities, such as: composers gain experience working with performers at varying skill levels, performers gain insight into the compositional process, composers may develop and test out new formats in a safe environment, performers explore their own idiosyncratic musicality, and both may develop new kinds of creativity working within these contexts. Most importantly, each individual music graduate student will have the opportunity to participate creatively and professionally as musicians with their community.
