About Us
Breaking Barriers seeks to reduce the feeling of loneliness and isolation that many older adults feel as they age by providing a lasting friendship with college students. Our ultimate goal is to bridge language and cultural barriers within the elderly population by matching older adults with students who speak their respective languages. In doing so, seniors may comfortably communicate and express themselves without linguistic barriers. As time goes by, this mutual relationship should inspire and give a new sense of purpose to college students as they engage and learn from senior citizens. We hope that this mutual relationship is beneficial for both the college student and the older adult. At the current moment, Breaking Barriers is working towards bridging the digital divide. In the midst of the pandemic, everything is moving towards an online platform. As this is happening, older adults are further left behind and socially isolated as a result of insufficient technology and digital skills. Breaking Barriers’ volunteers will be assisting older adults with learning different platforms (I.e. zoom, Facebook, google doc, google slides). We have many older adults, with very limited skill levels, who are interested in learning how to better use their laptop/computer. While engaging in 1-on-1 technology lessons, volunteers and older adults may also communicate and get to know each other! If you enjoy interacting with older adults and/or our mission resonates with you, please apply using this link! https://forms.gle/yrv166KvoS3YkeGg7
